LCF Law Xmas LogoTry our quiz and find out how much you really know about the law.

Below, we have listed strange laws. Some of them are real laws and the others are made up. Can you spot which are true and which are false?

Questions:

  1. It is illegal to hang out washing on a Sunday on the west coast of Scotland.
  1. It is illegal to feed spinach to a pig.
  1. It is illegal to attach a stamp to an envelope upside down.
  1. It is illegal to handle salmon in suspicious circumstances.
  1. In Cornwall, it is illegal to give someone an Easter egg on Christmas Day.
  1. It is illegal to walk a dog without carrying two waste bags.
  1. In Anglesey, it is illegal for a man to ride a bike topless.
  1. In London, it is illegal to carry a plank along the pavement.
  1. It is illegal to drive a car to Barnard Castle.

Answers:

  1. False. It is not illegal to hang out washing on a Sunday on the west coast of Scotland, although the neighbour did once complain when my mum did so on a family holiday.
  1. False. You can feed your pig as much spinach as you wish with the uneaten sprouts on Boxing Day.
  1. True. Technically, it is treason. This law is obviously out of date as no one sends a letter anymore.
  1. True, under the Salmon Act 1986, which was designed to combat illegal salmon fishing.
  1. False. It is not illegal to give someone an Easter egg on Christmas Day in Cornwall or anywhere else. This is good because buying up cheap unsold Easter eggs just after Easter and giving them away as Christmas presents is a great money saving tip. But check the use by dates.
  1. True. In parts of the UK, it is an offence to walk a dog without carrying a waste bag, which means that if you only have one waste bag and use it part of the way through the walk, you are breaking the law for the rest of the walk.
  1. False - just painful if he falls off.
  1. True. It is an offence under the Metropolitan Police Act to carry a plank along the pavement in London, presumably because of the crowded streets.
  1. Hmm…..we will have to pass on this one!

Have a great (and lawful) Christmas from everyone at LCF Law
