YOUR GUIDE TO INTESTACY

Intestacy? noun [in-tes-tuh-see]

Being 'Intestate' at death — One who dies without a valid legal Will. Over 75% of the population pass away without a Will. When this happens, who inherits your estate is governed by law.

The current law is very complex, but from the 1st October 2014 the law is being simplified. The Inheritance and Trustees Powers Act 2014
introduces the changes. This law however, will only apply if you leave behind a husband, wife or civil partner. (In this note, references to a surviving spouse also include registered civil partnerships.)
